Pattern Language

by Mark Moffett and David Fodel

Pattern Language

Pattern Language is a visual music composition loosely based on a concept rooted in minimalism called 'phasing'.The work consists of 2 layers (upper and lower windows) comprised of 5 visual motifs of different lengths that shift in and out of alignment with one another, creating a repeating yet ever-changing series of combinations. The imagery was created from geometric and organic sources, using both generative and photographic techniques, and digitally modulated by oscillations extracted from musical and other references. The resulting imagery is rear-projected onto special material using a series of projectors from the interior of the 2nd and 3rd floor windows of 331 N. Superior Street to create a luminous spectacle seen from the ground below. Pattern Language is an attempt to celebrate this block, this building, its potential, its place in Toledo’s past, present and future.
