The Waterville Area Arts Council is proud to announce its first annual plein air event, “Art and About in Waterville”! The three day event begins on June 6 through June 8 and local artists may choose to participate any or all of the days. Plein air, French for “open air,” is used to describe the act of painting outdoors and has its roots in 19th century Europe. Painting on location allows artists to capture the true atmosphere of the moment and requires incredible confidence in brushwork and color. Several locations throughout historic and scenic Waterville have been selected as places for artists to depict. The artists may choose any of these locations to paint during the 3 day event. There is no charge to be part of painting portion of the event. However there will be an opportunity for artists to sell their work on the afternoon of Saturday, June 8 and a $25 fee is required to be part of the sale at Peddlers Alley in Waterville. Participants in the sale may sell work they have created at the event as well as studio work that has been previously created. The public will be invited to watch the artists in action and to attend the sale on Saturday. Artists are asked to pre-register and note painting locations. The information will be posted daily so visitors will know where to observe the artists each day. Each participating artist will receive a commemorative gift and a goodie bag from the Waterville Area Arts Council. Local businesses will be offering discounts and specials for artists throughout the event. Media coverage will be encouraged as well. Artist registration forms are available from the Waterville Area Arts Council Facebook page or at the Silver Lining Gallery, 122 Mechanic St., Waterville. If you have questions, please call 419-441-0025.
