The ten bike racks were designed by nine different artists and have been placed in high-traffic locations throughout the district. A public reception to celebrate the artists and the installation of the second phase of this ongoing project will be held on Thursday, May 16th at the Bronze Boar. The Arts Commission is pleased to announce the selected submissions for Phase II of the Artist Designed Bike Racks Project. This project of the Art in Public Places Committee will see ten new bike racks installed throughout the Warehouse District in the spring of 2013. This phase of the project saw more than 120 submissions from nearly 60 regional artists. With so many wonderful designs to choose from, the Design Review Board - a group composed of community stakeholders, bicycle enthusiasts and neighborhood representatives - set out on the difficult task of selecting just ten designs for fabrication. The selected designs are as follows: Rotation by Brent Lohmann, Mr. 419 by Amy Fidler, Leap Frog by Rodriguez-Lehman, 2 Birds 1 Tweet by Clifton Harvey, Yarnbomb Holder 1 by Streetspun Yarnbombing, Coffee Break by Debi Heiks, Strongman the Bike Protector by Michelle Dunoski, Jumping Fish by Brien Strancar, Thumbs Up! by Brien Strancar, and Wood Grain by Mr. Taylor. Selected designs will be fabricated throughout the winter and installed in the spring. Artists will receive a $500 honorarium per design selected.

Submissions deadline for both the Warehouse District and Toledo Museum of Art Bike Racks entries is Thursday, November 1, 2012. All submissions must be postmarked by or delivered to The Arts Commission offices (1838 Parkwood Ave., Toledo, OH 43604) by the end of business, 4:30 p.m.
The Arts Commission is proud to announce a pilot partnership with the Toledo Museum of Art in the search for artist designed bike racks. Three to five additional designs will be chosen by the Museum. Artists selected for this addendum will also receive a $500 stipend and see their design fabricated and installed in various locations on the TMA’s 32 acre campus. The funds for the bike racks will be raised through crowd-sourcing, and not the 1% For Art program. The number of designs realized will be dependent upon the amount raised.

The Arts Commission is seeking designs for Phase 2 of the Artist Designed Bike Racks project. Similar to the Uptown District phase of this initiative, we are looking for designs for bike racks that can accommodate two bicycles, one on each side of the rack (similar to traditional “U” shaped racks) and that will represent Toledo’s unique aesthetic and cultural identity. Designs are now being accepted for this project and all local artists (see ELIGIBILITY for specific geographic boundaries) are encouraged to participate. Winning designs will hit the streets in spring, 2013. Submissions Deadline: November 1

Artist designed bike racks have appeared throughout the country and are particularly popular in areas that want to exhibit their support for the arts while encouraging bicycle traffic. The Arts Commission sought to develop a series of these bike racks that would represent Toledo’s unique aesthetic and cultural identity. A design competition was launched in August of 2011 and yielded over 80 submissions from over 40 local and regional artists. The Design Review Board, which was composed of community stakeholeders, bicycle enthusiasts and neighborhood representitives, selected a group of 10 bike rack designs from the submission pool to produce for this project. Below are the winning designs.

The Arts Commission anticipates that these new Artist Designed Bike Racks will be installed in the spring of 2012.The Uptown District has been selected as the initial area of focus for this project. Its growing reputation as a destination for arts and culture coupled with a strong potential for increased bicycle traffic makes Uptown a natural fit for this public art project. A number of arts and culture related businesses and organizations are located in this district including Toledo School for the Arts, The City Paper, Madhouse, Manhattan’s, and Scrap 4 Art. The Arts Commission has begun reaching out to these businesses and encouraging their support and/or partnership. This district is also located in close proximity to the Old West End which contributes to Uptowns existing culture of bicycle patronage. The installation of new Artist Designed Bike Racks will encourage these riders to continue frequenting this area and potentially attract other riders as well.
This project is funded by the City of Toledo's 1% for Art Program. The 1% for Art Program is administred by the Arts Commission through its Art in Public Places Committee. For more information about this program CLICK HERE
