Toledo and Lucas County Arts Relief Grants
In January 2021, The Arts Commission, with funding from the City of Toledo and Lucas County, distributed approximately $425,000 in grants to local artists and small arts organizations through the City of Toledo and Lucas County Arts Relief Grants program. This economic relief funding was aimed at supporting artists and organizations whose ability to earn income has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This investment provided relief for 14 arts and culture organizations and 190 individual artists.
The Arts Commission commends local artists who dedicate many hours and personal resources to advancing their artform. The Merit Award program recognizes outstanding individual local artists – literary, performing and visual. A panel of renowned artists and cultural leaders from other Midwest communities make recommendations for funding to the Arts Commission staff and board. The Merit Award program not only presents the potential for monetary benefits for the artists applying but also valuable exposure to the invited review panelists and the art communities they represent.
The Arts Commission values the many artists across disciplines who contribute vibrancy to Toledo. The Accelerator Grant is a competitive program offering financial support with quick turn-around for artists to advance their creative projects, thereby advancing their careers. Eligible categories of support include: equipment, supplies, professional development and project support. Grant amounts are not to exceed $1500.
The Arts Commission supports area teens through our Young Artists at Work (YAAW) and Congressional Exhibition programs. By creating opportunities to show work and fostering environments for learning and collaboration, we are dedicated to inspiring the youth of our city's future to dream big, create big, and become active and engaged artists in our community.
For artists who are interested in selling goods at various shows and markets throughout the state of Ohio you will need to obtain a Transient Vendors License (TVL) for the legal collection of state sales tax. The State offers licenses for an initial fee of $25. There are both paper and online formats of the application. After setting up an Ohio Business Gateway account, you can use this portal to digitally apply for the TVL on the spot, in addition to finding details on how to collect, report and pay sales tax.
For artists who are interested in busking - a.k.a. street performing - the City of Toledo offers an opportunity for official licensure. By obtaining an official City of Toledo Street Performing License, artists are legally allowed to collect tips for their performances on public/City property. The City offers licenses for an initial fee of $20, and just $5 to renew each following year. Licenses are valid from January through December each year.
Note: many organizations and venues have adjusted opportunity deadlines and formats due to Covid-19. Please check with each organization before applying.

Flexible support to help arts and culture organizations grow their capacity, fund artist engagements, and build community.
Grants + Funding
Arts Midwest GIG (Grow, Invest, Gather) Fund
The GIG (Grow, Invest, Gather) Fund, designed to provide support to arts organizations as they re-build and re-imagine during the continued uncertainty caused by COVID-19. These flexible grants will help organizations across the Midwest increase their capacity to gather their community to experience the power of creative expression together.
The GIG Fund builds upon Arts Midwest’s touring grants program, which in various forms over the last 35 years has given grants to performing arts organizations across the Midwest to support touring dance, music, and theater performances. However, over the last year the challenges of COVID-19 have brought the touring circuit almost to a halt. To respond to these changes in the Midwest creative sector, the GIG Fund will offer financial support to arts and culture organizations that helps them build a bridge towards presenting touring artists in the future.
Nonprofit organizations located in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, or Wisconsin and the Native nations that share this geography can apply to receive $2,500 from the GIG Fund. These grants will support costs associated with engaging artists in community experiences as safely as possible given the current circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants can be also allocated be towards capacity building work.
The Arts Midwest GIG Fund has two deadlines in 2021:
May 3, 2021 for projects happening July through December, 2021
November 3, 2021 for projects happening January through June, 2022

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Artist-in-Residence
4 to 6 week residencies
Summary: The Artist-in-Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the refuge’s inspiring landscapes and wildlife.
The program seeks professional artists whose work is related to the refuge’s interpretive themes and supports the mission of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The program provides an artist with uninterrupted time to pursue their work and the opportunity to engage and inspire the public through outreach programs. Refuge housing is provided.
The artist is required to present several public programs during their residency. The programs must be related to their experience as the artist-in-residence and can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. Rauschenberg Emergency Grants for Artists
Rolling deadline
The program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 for unexpected medical emergencies.
New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is proud to partner with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation to administer a new emergency grant program called Rauschenberg Emergency Grants. This marks the first phase of a program that will be in the tradition of Change, Inc., a non-profit foundation established in 1970 by Robert Rauschenberg to assist professional artists of all disciplines in need of emergency medical aid.
The program will provide one-time grants of up to $5,000 for unexpected medical emergencies. The grants are available to visual and media artists and choreographers who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the United States, District of Columbia, or U.S. Territories. If you aren’t sure if your artistic discipline fits within these guidelines, please contact the grants administrator.
DEADLINE
There is no deadline; applications will be accepted and reviewed by the panel on a monthly basis beginning in late May/early June 2020.
Please note: there is a set amount of funding allocated for these grants each year; once this amount has been awarded we cannot accept additional applications until more funds are made available. Our website will indicate when all funds have been granted.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Open to visual and media artists and choreographers. If you aren’t sure if your artistic discipline fits within these guidelines, please contact emergencyfunds@nyfa.org.
Open to artists who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the United States, District of Columbia, or U.S. Territories.
Applicants must demonstrate current and ongoing activity in artistic discipline/s.
Applicants cannot be enrolled in any degree-seeking program.
GUIDELINES:
The fund provides one-time cash grants of up to $5,000 to cover expenses caused by one-time, unexpected medical emergencies. Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to: hospital and doctor bills (including insurance co-pays), tests, physical/occupational therapy, prescription drugs specifically for the emergency medical condition, and emergency dental work.
Grants cannot be used to cover expenses for non-emergency medical conditions, ongoing psychiatric treatment, regular dental check-ups or procedures, eyeglasses or standard vision care, elective surgery, non-medical expenses resulting from financial hardship, purchase of materials, loan repayment, purchase of insurance, and loss of property, even if the result of an emergency.
Recipients can receive one grant from the Rauschenberg Emergency Grants program in their lifetime.
Funds go directly to the artist, not a medical provider, vendor, or any individual on the grantee’s behalf. Grant awards are routinely paid by check. Grantees with a Chase account can request an electronic funds transfer (ETF). Other grantees may receive an ETF and will be charged at $50 transaction fee, which cannot be paid by grant funds.
Period covered: expenses from six months prior to applying and/or projected six months into the future can be requested.

The Foundation recognizes and supports the serious, fully-committed artists at a mature stage of their careers with grants of $25,000.

The Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant
Deadline February 26, 2021
The Foundation wishes to encourage artists who have dedicated their lives to developing their art, regardless of their level of commercial success.
Please note that these grants are available only to mature individual visual artists. The Foundation defines maturity in this case as having worked for 20 years or more in a mature phase of art.
The Gottlieb Foundation does not fund organizations, educational institutions, students, graphic artists, or those working in crafts. The disciplines of photography, film, video, or related forms are not eligible unless the work directly involves, or can be interpreted as, painting or sculpture. The Foundation does not fund exhibitions, installations, or projects of any kind.
Last year, the Foundation awarded grants of $25,000 each to 12 artists.
This program was conceived in order to recognize and support the serious, fully-committed artist, and we hope these individuals will consider applying. Twelve grants are awarded each year. Applications are reviewed by a panel of five professionals in the arts who have no affiliation with the Foundation. In this program, the following criteria must be met:
MATURITY
Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate that they have been working in a mature phase of their art for at least 20 years. Maturity is based on the level of intellectual, technical, and creative development maintained over this time period. Artists must show that their primary involvement has been with their artistic goals, regardless of other personal or financial responsibilities. Artists must work in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, or printmaking.
FINANCIAL NEED
In addition to the maturity requirement, eligibility for an Individual Support grant is determined by the applicant’s current financial need. Each applicant must complete the financial disclosure section in full and must submit the appropriate financial documentation.
